The notion of vanishing in plain sight in New York City is simultaneously terrifying and exhilarating because we're all fugitives, guarding secrets and private crimes not punishable by law. What if you could be tracked down using the scant, faint traces you leave behind? The myriad photos and scraps of ephemera discarded on the streets of New York began to look like evidence, a series of mute clues. Between 1984 and 1985, I used these found materials to make a set of 100 Fugitive Felon cards based on the idea of mug shots, creating a way to categorize the images I collected, and assign them a hypothetical criminal context. The cards owe a debt to the haunting visual beauty of law-enforcement records from before the days of computers.
