>  Ganzdex: Mexican Fotonovelas  launch feature
Of the rich and largely forgotten Mexican comic tradition, surely the most unique and emblematic genre is the masked wrestler fotonovela. The genre was established by fotonovela pioneer José G. Cruz when he started an action/horror/police/wrestling comic starring real life masked wrestler Santo el Enmascarado de Plata. The success of this title led to a slew of imitations, first by other wrestlers, such as Blue Demon and Huracán Ramirez, and later by characters created specifically for comics, such as Neutrón. Although these comics are at times inspired in their resourceful use of collage and their anything-goes approach to genre conventions, their most memorable aspect is surely their covers, which are often masterpieces of pulp weirdness.
