>  Ganzdex: Bodoni Jonas  launch feature
Robert Jonas’s paperback covers brought a mid level modernist aesthetic to middlebrow prose—a marriage made in heaven. Jonas, known by lowercase Bodoni signature, was a paperback cover designer who spent much of his career working for Penguin and its various imprints. The best of his designs were published in the 1940s, marked by a late modern illustrative style that combined technical facility with dynamic compositions and a knack for subtle abstractions of figure and scale. He did not create floating abstract shapes or high-flown collage, he preferred more representational forms from which he could then safely riff. His style adapted modernist mannerisms and made them commercial. Nevertheless, the concepts behind each image were clearly delineated and his covers are among the most striking in paperback history.
